Answer: The island would be totally flattened and dead. They wouldn't want their country to look like that. So they would surrender.

Answer: Japan started the war by bombing a military base in America. So to retaliate we're going to bomb their cities and kill civilians? That isn't going to make it any better.

Answer: The atomic bomb could have been demonstrated on an uninhabited island and still have scared the Japanese enough to make them surrender.
